dc.description.abstract | The popular and ornamental plant Mirabilis jalapa (from Nyctaginaceae Family) is originary from Latin America and planted in several countries around the world. It hás been characterised by a number of important properties due its chemical compounds which have been isolated and used in medicine. The main properties described are: from leaves (hypoglicemic, anti-viral, antinociceptive and anti-inflamatory activities), from flowers (antispasmodic activity), from tubers and roots (anti-oxidative, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-histaminic, anti-hyperlipidemic and hypoglicemic activities). The roots contain, in addition to the mentioned compounds, a large amount of starch, which also has small particle size as well as those obtained from the seeds. So, the main objective of this investigation was to purify the starch, with small granule size, obtained in the extraction process of Mirabilis jalapa roots. After, the starch was characterised by the techniques: thermogravimetry, derivative thermogravimetry (TG/DTG), simultaneous thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TGDSC), Field-emission-gun Scanning Electron Microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (FEG-SEM-EDS) and by X-ray Diffractometry by powder method (XRD). The EDS results shown that before purification, this starch has large amount of raphides (calcium oxalate) confirmed by qualitative analysis and quantified by TG/DTG and TG-DSC (45,12%). After purification with 2.0 mol l-1 of HCl the calcium oxalate was not present and the shape and size of starch granules were maintained (average diameter 1-5 mm) as observed by SEM. | pt_BR |
dc.description.resumo | A planta popular e ornamental Mirabilis jalapa (da Família Nyctaginaceae) é originária da América Latina e plantada em vários países ao redor do mundo. Tem sido caracterizada por um importante número de propriedades devido a seus compostos químicos que foram isolados e usados na medicina. As principais propriedades descritas são: folhas (atividades hipoglicêmica, antiviral, antinociceptiva e antiinflamatória), de flores (atividade antiespasmódica), de tubérculos e raízes (anti-oxidante, antibacteriana, antifúngica, anti-histamínica, antihiperlipidêmica e atividades hipoglicêmicas). As raízes contêm, além dos compostos mencionados, uma grande quantidade de amido, que também tem um tamanho pequeno de partícula, bem como aqueles obtidos a partir das sementes. Assim, o objetivo principal desta investigação foi purificar o amido, com pequeno tamanho de grânulo, obtido no processo de extração das raízes de Mirabilis jalapa. Posteriormente, o amido foi caracterizado pelas técnicas: termogravimetria, termogravimetria derivada (TG/DTG), calorimetria exploratória diferencial por termogravimetria simultânea (TG-DSC), microscopia eletrônica de varredura por emissão de campo com espectroscopia de dispersão-dispersão (MEV-EDS) e por Difratometria de Raios-X pelo método do pó (XRD). Os resultados de EDS mostraram que, antes da purificação, este amido possui grande quantidade de raphides (oxalato de cálcio), confirmado por análise qualitativa e quantificado por TG/DTG e TG-DSC (45,12%). Após a purificação com 2,0 mol.L-1 de HCl, o oxalato de cálcio não estava presente e a forma e tamanho dos grânulos de amido foram mantidos (diâmetro médio de 1 a 5 ᶯm), como observado por SEM. | pt_BR |
